“I am so proud that we managed to quadruple our vote share in Brighton Kemptown & Peacehaven. I’d like to thank every single person who supported my campaign and put their faith in me at the ballot box. The 19.7% total is a 14.7% jump from last time and our best result ever. And it was the 15th best Green Party performance nationally. So I’m already working with others on plans to turn Kemptown and Peacehaven Green at the next election.”

June 2024: Elaine is a local parent and a lecturer at the University of Brighton. She has lived in Brighton for 25 years, hailing originally from the north east of England. She became involved with the Green Party following Caroline Lucas’ election campaign in Brighton Pavilion in 2010. She was hugely inspired by Caroline’s fresh, hopeful approach, and her focus on fairness and inclusivity.

Background

Elaine says: I believe in a fairer and more sustainable future for all and care about the real issues that affect people.

“I believe in a fairer and more sustainable future for all and care about the real issues that affect people.”

  • The NHS, health and social care
  • The affordability and availability of housing
  • Water quality: sewage in the sea and pollution in rivers
  • The cost of living crisis and obtaining a high living standard for everyone
  • Tacking the climate emergency and restoring nature

I served as a Brighton and Hove city councillor for Hanover and Elm Grove from 2019 to 2023.

During this period, I:

  • led the council’s call for Southern Water to stop sewage pollution in our sea
  • worked with local communities during the Covid pandemic, collecting donations and raising funds for food banks
  • co-chaired the Environment, Transport and Sustainability committee
  • helped develop policies to reduce emissions and promote a safer, more sustainable urban environment
  • helped promote and expand climate education in the city’s schools
  • chaired the Corporate Parenting Board, addressing issues affecting looked-after children. I let care leavers lead meetings, to make the board feel more accessible to them
  • represented the council on regional bodies, including the Transport for the South East Partnership Board.

After 14 years of a cruel, Conservative government, people deserve a kinder type of politics and leaders who will fund action on the climate and biodiversity emergency at the level needed.

More Green voices in parliament are needed to push the likely Keir Starmer-led Government to be more effective on the issues that people really care about. A vote for the Greens in Brighton Kemptown and Peacehaven is a vote for Real Hope and Real Change.
