Green Party PCC Candidate demands to know if Sussex Police resources were used to monitor senior party figures

James Doyle, Green Party PCC Candidate for Sussex, is demanding to know if Sussex Police resources were used to monitor senior party figures, as outlined by today’s Guardian article. It has become clear the police have been extensively monitoring the activities of Caroline Lucas MP, and Sian Berry, the Green Party candidate for London Mayor. The entry records show Lucas was monitored whilst attending demonstrations in Brighton on a number of occasions. This suggests Sussex Police may have been involved, not just the Anti-Extremism Unit.

James Doyle said: “I am extremely shocked and disappointed to see such a colossal waste of taxpayers’ money, using an ‘Anti-Extremist Unit’ to monitor the activities of Green Party figures.

“I challenge the current Sussex PCC Katy Bourne to explain whether Sussex Police resources were used to monitor Caroline Lucas and others locally. If so, why?

“Such monitoring, if it happened locally, represents a serious waste of Sussex Police time and resources. Everybody has the right to assemble peacefully, speak freely and protest. Shouldn’t the police be fighting real crime?”
