Brighton & Hove Green Party backs the Brighton Says Yes community plan

Brighton & Hove Green Party and our 12 local councillors are proud to put our full support behind the Brighton Says Yes Community Plan.

The aim of the plan is clear: for our community to come together to ensure that all those claiming asylum – especially families, single women and young people – can stay in our city rather than be scattered across the country by the Home Office, away from friends, neighbours, and the city they call home.

As a party committed to fighting for migrant and refugee justice, we take our status as a City of Sanctuary seriously. In June, we were proud to be a part of organising the Carnival Against Fascism that stood firm with our migrant and racialised communities against fascism, racism and state violence. And in July, we brought a motion demanding our City Council ends compliance with cruel Home Office immigration raids. Sadly, Labour wrecked this motion – choosing to pat themselves on the back rather than recognise the continued injustice of hostile Labour immigration policies.

We know that actions speak louder than words. Our City Council should enable our communities to come together and house people seeking asylum with dignity, independence and support.Yet at time of writing, this Labour administration have yet again shown what their solidarity really means – nothing. They must do better.

Together, we must build a city where everyone feels welcome. Greens are united in:

  • Supporting the Brighton Says Yes campaign and calling on the Council to formally back the plan.
  • Calling on the government to provide migrants with dignified work, housing and living conditions.
  • Committing to working with campaigners towards integrating the Community Plan into our Green manifesto for next year’s local elections.

Your Green Councillors will always stand up for our migrant communities.
