Green MEP blasts Tory MPs across the South East for ‘voting against the sovereignty of Parliament’

Keith Taylor, Green Party MEP for the South East, has accused Conservative MPs across the South East of ‘bartering away the sovereignty of Parliament’ for the sake of the Government’s survival.

The Government blocked a key Lords amendment on the EU (Withdrawal) Bill on Tuesday which would have given Parliament a “meaningful vote” on Brexit.

Responding to the results, Mr Taylor, who penned a cross-party letter with his Lib Dem colleague Catherine Bearder calling on MPs in Remain-supporting seats to back the Lords’ amendments, said:

“It’s astonishing that Conservative MPs have just voted to relinquish the sovereignty of Parliament, based on the flimsy assurances and hollow promises of a Prime Minister that is the main architect of the shambles we now find ourselves in.”

Kent Green MEP responds to latest news on Port of Dover post-Brexit chaos

Responding to the latest news on the chaos surrounding plans to avoid post-Brexit tailbacks at the Port of Dover, Green MEP for Kent, Keith Taylor, a member of the European Parliament’s Transport Committee, said: “The Port of Dover infrastructure failure throws up two extremely concerning issues; one, the Government’s post-Brexit contingency plan is to let chaos reign. Two, a reminder that the proposals to turn much of Kent into a lorry park blighted by a toxic smog have been long-delayed because they are environmentally destructive and not the answer to any problem.”

Green MEPs: Heathrow expansion as “a sick joke”

The UK’s Green MEPs have slammed the Government’s decision to push ahead with Heathrow expansion, branding the move “a sick joke” that shows disdain for public health and the UK’s climate commitments.

Keith Taylor, Green MEP for the South East and a Member of the European Parliament’s Transport and Tourism Committee, said: “Heathrow expansion remains the British political establishment’s most dangerous climate blindspot. Aviation is already a top ten global polluter and emissions from the heavily subsidised industry are set to balloon by 300 to 700% if urgent action isn’t taken.”

Cross-party MEPs urge South East MPs in Remain-supporting areas to back Lords amendments to the Withdrawal Bill in joint letter

Green MEP Keith Taylor and his South East colleague Lib Dem MEP Catherine Bearder have teamed up to put pressure on MPs in Remain-supporting seats across the region.

Keith Taylor, the Green Party’s MEP for the South East, said: “In an attempt to distract the public’s attention away from the shambolic, chaotic and divided Brexit they have presided over, the Government is trying to railroad a bill that will define Britain’s future through the House of Commons in just 12 hours. The move confirms the Conservatives’ utter contempt for democracy and parliamentary sovereignty, despite all the Brexiteers Ministers’ pre-referendum claims to the contrary.”
