Green Party MEP visits Isle of Wight to support local anti-drilling campaign

Keith Taylor, Green MEP for the South East, is on the Isle of Wight today to campaign against ‘climate-destructive’ oil drilling on the Island.

Mr Taylor, a vocal anti-fracking and oil and gas drilling campaigner, met local residents at a proposed drilling site at Brook Beach alongside local campaigner and councillor Daniel James before hosting a public meeting on the alternatives to oil and gas drilling and the importance of renewable energy investment on the Isle of Wight.

“Out of the oily frying pan into the fire” – Green MEP reacts to Cuadrilla’s Balcombe sale

The Green MEP for the South East has reacted with incredulity to the news that the fracking firm Cuadrilla has sold the operation of its Balcombe drilling licence to Angus Energy.

Responding to the news, Keith Taylor MEP, a member of the European Parliament’s Environment and Public Health Committee and the European Chair of the Climate Parliament, said:

“As if having Cuadrilla circling around again wasn’t bad news enough, the people of Balcombe have now been tossed out of the oily frying pan and into the fire. As our neighbours in Surrey are only too aware, Angus Energy is a firm that believes it is above local democracy. Angus’s belligerence after drilling without permission in Surrey betrays a company that is, at best, ignorant of the planning regulations imposed on them, and, at worst, feels no duty to abide by them. In short, Angus is a firm that can’t or shouldn’t be expected to be trusted.”

Greens raise cancer patients’ Brexit fears as David Davis visits Cancer charity

Greens have written to the Business Secretary to relay the concerns of UK patients’ groups about the Government’s ‘needless’ decision to leave the European nuclear safety treaty, ‘EURATOM’, post-Brexit.

Green MEPs Keith Taylor and Jean Lambert, in their letter to Greg Clark, highlighted warnings from the Royal College of Radiologists, the British Nuclear Medicine Society and the British Medical Association that leaving EURATOM presents a real threat to the uninterrupted, cross-border supply of the medical isotopes that an estimated 1 million cancer patients in the UK rely on every year.

Greens slam lack air pollution failures as Government back in court (again)

Green MEP Keith Taylor has slammed Ministers as the UK Government is dragged back before the High Court for a third time to defend its failure to comply with EU air quality laws.

“Here we are again; a Conservative government dragged kicking and screaming to court, but still happier to waste time and taxpayers’ money fighting against taking action on air pollution. Ministers ought to be desperate to try and clean up a toxic crisis that is linked to the needless deaths of 50,000 people in the UK every year. Instead, the Government is content to continue failing to take even the most basic action to uphold its duty to protect British citizens.”
