A meeting of Brighton & Hove City Council's Policy and Resources Committee yesterday approved a deal for Saltdean Lido to be handed back to the city council at the end of the month by the businessman who has held the lease since 1997.
The move follows a sustained community campaign against plans by the leaseholder to develop the site and months of complex behind-the-scenes legal negotiations by the Green council administration.

Councillor Geoffrey Bowden, Chair of the Economic Development and Culture Committee, said: "The council administration stated from the outset that it was determined to resolve this issue.
"In our view it should have been tackled many years before, but the political will to do so seemed to be lacking.
"I am delighted that a major obstacle to finding a long term and sustainable solution for the successful operation of the Lido complex has been removed today.
"This is just the end of one phase, though.
"Once the keys have been handed back we will be sending in an expert team immediately to assess whether it will be possible to open the complex this season.
"We hope it will be but there can be no guarantees.
"The campaign highlighted many health and safety issues and we need to be satisfied that it is safe to open to the public under a temporary management arrangement until long term arrangements can be put in place.
"We will continue to work with the community to find the best way to ensure that the Lido stays an asset for the community."
