Paltry government grant for Sussex police risks jobs

27 November 2009

Responding to news of the Government's 'floor level' Police Authority settlement, Brighton & Hove's sole police authority member Green councillor Ben Duncan said:

"I'm disappointed that the Government have seen fit to give Sussex a well below average grant increase of £174m - one of the smallest grants in the country.

"It seems they can find billions to bail out the banks, but when it comes to putting more bobbies on the beat and keeping our communities safe, there's little money in the pot.

"The Chief Constable has already warned that police officers may lose their jobs as the force faces a £35m funding pinch over the next five years.

"I'm disappointed the Government has refused to meet that shortfall and guarantee all police jobs."
